Career

 RUN Services Limited November 2010 – November 2011

I was offered the position of Technical Manager on contract to oversee their proposed move into the house building sector. In addition I provide architectural services to private clients as well as in house technical support. I have been requested to provide a number of 3D visualisations and have subsequently become very experienced in the use of Google Sketchup. A big element of my workload has been assessing tender drawings and issuing requests for information to ensure that the company is adequately protected for any extra over work that may be required but not identified on the main contractors architect drawings. The contract was terminated due to lack of incoming work.

 

Persimmon Homes Lancashire March 2010 – October 2010

I was employed initially on a 3 month rolling contract to provide architectural support to the in house technical design team. I was subsequently offered a permanent position and took up the new role of Senior Architect from 1st July 2010. I was initially tasked with reviewing the way the technical department operates and putting in place design standards for both internal staff and external consultants to work to. I was also requested to review `the current development sites to see if they could be value engineered to generate more units or a more efficient design.


NWM Design Limited June 2008 – Present

I was presented with an opportunity to undertake some regeneration work in Manchester. This gave me the opportunity to set up my own design consultancy.

The job required me to provide dilapidation surveys for over 250 properties for three Facelift Schemes on behalf of Manchester City Council’s Housing Investment Framework. This involved me having to provide a measured and photographic survey, CAD drawings and a Scope of Work advising on what remedial measures were required for each of the properties along with areas and quantities so that it could be costed by the project Quantity Surveyor.

Projects undertaken have included shop conversions, a new bar, housing developments, private house designs, home extensions and CAD work for company’s without in house designers.

 

Miller Homes North West Limited April 2002 – May 2008

During this period I started with the Company as Design Manager for the North West region. I was brought into the Company to build up the design team from a total of four people in 2002 to seventeen in 2008. During this period the Company grew from building 120 units, to 800 units per year in 2007, with projects varying in value from £5m - £50m. I was later promoted to Planning & Design Manager. 

One of my first tasks was to review the house type portfolio and design a new range of regional house types, many of which were later adopted by Group.

As Planning & Design Manager my main personal duties, aside from supporting the Technical Director, were attending weekly management meetings, chairing design team meetings and generally ensuring that targets were achieved on time and to an agreed budget. In addition I was required to prepare weekly reports to the Technical Director advising on the progress of the various projects.

I was also responsible for promoting and introducing a bespoke Document Management System within the Miller Group, providing the design brief for the Group IT Department to work to. The ‘Vault’ effectively replaced the traditional drawing & filing cabinets and local servers, utilizing the Group’s Intranet system to store, share and distribute working drawings and information. After the trials were successfully completed the Vault was rolled out to all the Homes regions and was also adopted by the Construction Division of the Miller Group.

I left McAlpine for Wilcon as a result of the impending takeover by Wimpey Homes. I held the position of Senior Designer, overseeing the planning and building control functions.

 

Alfred McAlpine Homes Limited March 2000 – October 2001

I joined McAlpine Homes as Company Planner having responsibility for the preparation of Sketch Viability, Planning Layouts and House Type working drawings. In addition I was also responsible for arranging for the maintenance and adoption of public open space areas.

 

Barratt Manchester Limited March 1995 – March 2000

Employed as Senior Planner as a result of the Company expanding its technical department to form a central design office for the Central Region Barratt Developments. My role was to establish the new regional design office and I had personal responsibility for the Leeds, Sheffield and East Midlands regions. The new design office offered regions without in house technical design capabilities a cost effective solution to employing external consultants.
