Current Position: Vodacom (PTY) Ltd: Manager Radio Planning and Optimization,

Western Region

I am currently employed as the Manager Radio Planning and Optimization for Vodacom, the leading cellular provider in South Africa.

I am responsible for all the radio planning and optimization activities in one of the 8 geographical regions that the company is split into.

The network that I am responsible for currently consists of, on the GSM side, 24 Base Station Controllers and 868 Radio Sites. On the UMTS side, 6 Radio Network Controllers and 514 Node B’s.

I also managed a project for the rollout of a small WiMax network.

I have experience in Motorola and Alcatel GSM equipment, Nokia Siemens and Alcatel UMTS equipment. These being the suppliers that are used by Vodacom at present.

My current duties involve the managing of 13 staff member consisting of 4 Engineers, 7 Radio Specialists and 2 Technicians. These staff are responsible for various activities from network planning and network monitoring to customer care functions.

During my time at Vodacom I have been involved in numerous activities that have included the successful introduction of 1800, successful introduction of UMTS.

I have also been involved in a GSM vendor swop as well as a UMTS vendor swop.

I am very interested in technology and do my best to keep up to date in numerous technological fields, not limiting myself to Telecommunications.

Work Experience

November 1999 to present: Vodacom

Radio Planning and Optimization Manager, Western Region.

My main responsibilities are

1. To ensure the effective management of 13 staff members in order to achieve divisional targets.

2. To achieve the Network Quality standards as dictated by the companies board of directors for the financial year.

3. To ensure that site planning is in accordance with company strategy by considering capacity, coverage and quality aspects as well as budgetary considerations.

4. Management of all technical aspects associated with network planning, optimization, configuration, network quality, installations and transmission.

5. To facilitate the roll out of adhoc projects and the testing of new network features in conjunction with the suppliers of equipment.

6. To ensure that adequate provision is made for network capacity, including BTS’s, BSC’s and transcoders.

7. Management of configuration planning and database integrity of all systems used in the region.

8. Management of network site installations and associated contractors.

9. Management of transmission link planning and installation for the radio portion of the network.

10. To address all escalated subscriber complaints promptly.

11. Formulation of the Radio Capex budgets and the management of the Radio Planning and Optimisation OPEX budgets.

12. To ensure financial savings are achieved as directed by the companies board of directors to meet financial targets given by the shareholders.

13. To ensure the timeous roll out of all radio network infrastructure and temporary network infrastructure according to network requirements and defined quality standards.

14. To ensure the effective roll out of new technologies, ie UMTS, Wimax in the network.

15. To ensure that staff are trained on and aware of the correct Health and Safety information and equipment so as to ensure optimal performance within a safe working environment.

16. To ensure that all radio sites are compliant with all Health and Safety regulations, with special emphasis on Electromagnetic Radiation.

 

September 1996 to October 1999: Vodacom

I was employed as a Radio Engineer based in Cape Town.

My responsibilities included

1. Planning new sites for capacity and coverage.

2. Optimization of the Radio Network to ensure network quality and targets are met.

3. Dimensioning of BSC’s.

4. Preparation of Radio Capex and Opex Budgets

5. 1800 and GPRS planning

6. New Switch planning

7. Acting manager when manager is on leave

January 1989 to September 1996: Reutech Radar Systems

I was employed as a RF Design Engineer.

My responsibilities included

1. Design, Testing and low rate production of RF Modules to be used in the company products.

2. Testing of the Radar Systems.

3. Project Management of the RF chain of one of the Radar systems being designed and produced by the company.

1984 to 1988: University of Cape Town

Study BSC (Electronic Engineering) degree.

Graduated in 1988.

Up till 1984: Rondebosch Boys High School.
