This two-part Job Search Strategy is offered to greatly increase your success rate when applying employment and sponsorship in Australia. The two key areas I have broken your Job Search Strategy into are: MAINSTREAM (the regular job search channels) and the HIDDEN JOB MARKET (developing and expanding networks, tapping into vacancies through the“back door” of companies). If you follow the instructions below, you will drastically increase your success rate for finding employment in Australia.
PART I - MAIN STREAM STRATEGY
This is the usual method of applying for jobs that most people follow: searching for positions on job search websites. This can be effective, however should not be the only method that you use when applying for positions. Many of the positions advertised through this medium are advertised by recruitment agencies, so you will not be applying directly to the company with the vacancy. This is usually not recommended when applying from outside of Australia, as recruitment agencies are less likely to consider applicants who require sponsorship. However, in a limited job market, it is sometimes necessary to apply through agencies if there aren’t many other options.
Be careful applying through recruitment agencies for several different vacancies. This can often make you appear desperate or like you do not have a clear focus in what you want. It is usually ok to apply for one or two vacancies through the same agency, however I suggest trying not to apply for too many more than that. Make note of the agency names that you are applying through so you can keep a track of your applications. You should also make note of the contact names and numbers on the job adverts so you can do a follow-up phone call or email to ensure they received your application and to discuss the role in more detail.
Job Search Websites and Recruitment Agencies
Below is a list of the major job search websites in Australia to search for positions, as well as a listing of the major recruitment agencies that you can search for positions directly through their website and register with them. It is a good idea to phone up some of the more specialized recruitment agencies and have a discussion with the recruiter who is most likely to recruit for positions in your field. This way you can establish a relationship with them, and also find out whether any of the companies they are recruiting for would be willing to sponsor a skilled overseas national.
